SALEM, OR (April 21, 2021) – Corban University will break ground on its new outdoor athletic complex, located on the north side of campus Friday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m. The groundbreaking will officially launch construction on the complex’s initial phase, set to be completed in fall of 2021, a $4 million project including a state-of-the-art track and field complex, competition turf field, field lighting, and improved drainage.

The ceremony will feature comments from University President Sheldon Nord, Salem Mayor Chuck Bennett, County Commissioner Kevin Cameron, and student athletes. Attendance is limited and is not open to the public due to COVID-related restrictions but can be viewed virtually on Corban University’s Facebook page.

“I’m so appreciative of all those who have gone before me who have worked hard to make this happen,” says Corban University Athletic Director, Sue Roth. “This Athletic Complex will be such a gift to our student athletes, as well as the whole Corban and Salem community.”

Corban University’s Outdoor Athletic Complex will be a win for the school and the broader Salem community, expanding the university’s ability to host high school competitions, club practices, regional and state tournaments, youth camps, and community events. Students and community members will be able to support Corban athletics at home games on-campus for the first time in the history of Corban’s Track and Field and Women’s Lacrosse programs. Men’s and Women’s soccer will return to competition on-campus after many seasons hosting home games at rented off-campus facilities.

“This project has been long coming, and this will be a game-changer for all student-athletes, as well as other students who want to exercise, play intramural sports, and engage in other outdoor activities that demand good drainage and lights,” says University President, Dr. Sheldon Nord. “This is another step for Corban toward being the university of choice for Christ-followers in the Pacific Northwest.”

During the fundraising for this initial phase, the University experienced 100% participation from its Board of Trustees, contributing over $1 million. Corban also received 100% participation from all coaches, Student Life employees, and members of the Advancement Department, showing solidarity for a project that has been in the University’s plans for some time. Ongoing fundraising will continue for future additions to the complex, including a baseball field, softball field, and practice soccer field.
