Anti-Hazing
Corban University Anti-Hazing Commitment
Corban University is a Christ-centered community committed to dignity, safety, and biblical love. Hazing in any form—physical, emotional, or psychological—violates not only our values but also state and federal law. Whether subtle or severe, hazing contradicts our call to respect one another as image-bearers of God (Genesis 1:26).
What is Hazing?
Hazing is any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, committed alone or with others, that:
- Is connected to joining, affiliating with, or maintaining membership in a student organization, and
- Endangers someone’s physical or psychological health or creates an unreasonable risk of harm
This applies regardless of whether the person consented or agreed to participate.
Federal Definition
Under the Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA), hazing includes any act that:
- Is linked to initiation or membership in a student organization, and
- Causes or creates a risk of physical or psychological injury beyond normal activity (e.g., team conditioning)
Examples include:
- Whipping, beating, shocking, or harmful substances
- Forced sleep deprivation or confinement
- Coerced consumption of food, alcohol, or drugs
- Sexual coercion
- Threats or criminal activity
Oregon State Law (ORS 163.197)
Hazing under Oregon law is knowingly causing someone to endure activities that present a serious risk of physical injury in connection with joining or maintaining status in a group.
Examples include:
- Physical brutality (e.g., beating, branding)
- Exposure to the elements or forced confinement
- Coerced use of drugs or alcohol
- Forcing someone to violate the law
Consent is not a defense under Oregon law.
Anyone—student, parent, faculty, staff, or guest—can report hazing. Reports can be made anonymously.
