Commencement Speaker: Gary Derickson, Ph.D.
Dr. Gary W. Derickson served on the faculty of Corban University (formerly Western Baptist College) for 35 years, beginning in 1991. His background, including a global upbringing in a military family, service in the United States Army as a tugboat captain, and doctoral study in Bible exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary, has shaped both his teaching and scholarship. Dr. Derickson’s graduate study in horticulture at Texas A&M University brings an unexpected dimension to his research, including work in biblical viticulture.
A dedicated and impactful teacher, Dr. Derickson is known for his clear, engaging instruction and his commitment to student learning. He taught Koine Greek for more than three decades, modeling lifelong learning through his disciplined personal study and annual reading of the Greek New Testament.
As a scholar, Dr. Derickson has contributed to the Nelson Study Bible, the Grace New Testament Commentary, and the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary, along with publishing multiple books and numerous journal articles, including in Bibliotheca Sacra. He has also been an active participant in the Evangelical Theological Society.
In recognition of his exemplary service, scholarly achievement, and enduring commitment to the mission of Corban University, Dr. Derickson has been awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus.

Ceremonial Mace
Originally used in medieval times as a practical weapon, the mace as a real weapon lost popularity with the disappearance of heavy armor. It evolved into an adorned symbol of academic dignity and authority during the 14th century and became one of the earliest distinctive signs of university officials. It was carried by the beadle (mace-bearer) during processions and graduation ceremonies.
The Corban University mace was handcrafted, out of native wood, by people in Indonesia and has been used for many years by our esteemed partner institution, the Universitas Pelita Harapan. In medieval and modern heraldry eagles are said to indicate courage, action, justice, and protection. The eagle situated upon the Holy Bible is representative of Corban’s dedication to its mission. The university strives to educate Christians who will courageously take action and make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19-20).
Each year the mace is carried by the senior-most faculty member. This year the mace-bearer is Marty Trammell, Ph.D.
Academic Regalia and Degrees
Robe or gown: Each degree type has a different style of gown. Bachelor’s gowns have pointed sleeves, and are worn closed. Master’s gowns have oblong sleeves, open at the wrist, with the base hanging down, and rear part of the oblong cut square while the arc cuts away. These robes have fasteners so they can be worn open or closed. Doctoral gowns have bell-shaped sleeves. Also designed with fasteners so it is worn open or closed. Doctoral robes also have trimmings including velvet panels down the front and three bars of velvet on the sleeves. All three gowns are usually black, though some colleges and universities use the color of the school.
Hood: Academic hoods are black, made from the same fabric as the gown. They vary in length, depending on the degree, from three feet to four feet, and the doctoral hood is wider. Lined with college and university colors, they typically have one field color and one chevron color, though sometimes there are school-specific variations. The edge of the hood is velvet, in the color of the degree subject.
