Commencement 2021

We know that you have been working hard to reach this important milestone in your educational journey. Congratulations on arriving at the end of this chapter! It is a significant accomplishment, and we are so proud of you.

On May 1, we will be recognizing you and your classmates in a Commencement ceremony. The challenge is that Corban will be hosting Commencement under very different circumstances this year. The direction we have chosen attempts to find the balance between having the public recognition along with the pomp and ceremony you all deserve, while at the same time being respectful of the state guidelines under which we need to operate.

We considered many different options, both indoors and outdoors, before making this decision. We have used the Salem Armory for Commencement in the past, but the limitations on attendance and lack of reliable streaming options for the event caused us to consider other options. We also explored two outdoor options, including our own soccer field and Volcanoes Stadium. While both would open the option to have greater numbers in attendance, the challenges related to costs, set-up, and, most importantly, the weather caused these to be set aside as well.

Here is the plan:

  • We will have multiple ceremonies in the Psalm Center on May 1, 2021, attended by graduates and faculty.
  • Each ceremony will be livestreamed to locations on campus where two guests of each graduate can view the ceremony on campus.
  • A livestream of each ceremony will be available to an unlimited number of individuals not able to be present on campus.
  • A reception for the graduates, their invited guests, and Corban faculty will be held immediately after each ceremony at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center parking lot.

We believe that hosting three separate ceremonies on Saturday, May 1, 2021, will give the best opportunity for graduates to share this important event with their classmates and at the same time allow family and friends to view the ceremony with a smaller number of guests able to join us on campus.

The 2021 graduating class, including both undergraduates and graduate students, will be divided by schools for the ceremonies, and the May 2020 graduates will join the School of Ministry’s ceremony.

Here is a summary of the upcoming events:

  • Times of ceremonies:
    • 9:00 a.m.: Ministry Department and All Registered May 2020 Graduates
    • 11:30 a.m.: Hoff School of Business and School of Education & Counseling
    • 2:00 p.m.: School of Arts & Sciences
  • Locations:
    • Ceremonies for students will be held in the Psalm Center.
    • Viewing for invited guests will take place at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center and Caulkins Hall classrooms.
    • Meet & Greet/reception to follow each ceremony at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
  • Guests:
    • Each graduate will have two tickets for guests to join them on campus for viewing and the reception to follow. The tickets will be available for distribution to students on April 16th.
    • A livestream option will be available for those not able to be on campus.

If you have questions please email registrar@corban.edu.

This plan has been implemented to allow a face-to-face experience for our graduates that remains in compliance with OHA guidelines for gathering. If there are significant changes in OHA or Marion County guidelines before May 1, appropriate adjustments will be made.

We know this is not ideal. Very little in the past year has been ideal, comfortable, or what we would have hoped for. But we do sincerely hope that Commencement Day will be a special time of recognizing your important accomplishment and looking ahead to wherever God is leading you.
