Exercise science majors certified by ACSM

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Ninety percent of Corban’s exercise science majors recently passed the national exam that qualifies them as Certified Personal Trainers (CPTs) with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The certification, internationally respected, reinforces their hire-ability.

Shannon Simmons, Corban’s Assistant Professor of Human Performance, said, “The Certified Personal Trainer Exam is required to be taken by all of our exercise science majors. We require this because many of our students are seeking professions in personal training, athletic training and physical therapy. Many of them can get paying internships and doors open for future employment when they have a certification through ACSM.”

Ten Corban students took the exam online in April, at the completion of “Exercise Prescription,” a course taught by Simmons. “This is our third year having students sit for the national certification exam,” she said, “and we have an increasing percentage passing each year.”

Dean of Athletic Activities Dave Bale said, “It is a very good examination for our exercise science majors, as it covers just about every area they study, including some of the management courses they are electing to take from the sport management track.”

As CPTs, the students are “qualified to develop and implement exercise programs for apparently healthy individuals or those who have medical clearance to exercise” according to the ACSM website. ACSM is the world’s largest organization for sports medicine and exercise science and their credentialing is considered the “gold standard” of the health fitness industry.

Simmons said, “ACSM has been monumental in advising the Surgeon General on exercise prescription recommendations and is the cream of the crop in practical and clinical certifications in both the medical and fitness fields.”

The newly certified CPTs are Kristen Allen (Salem, Ore.), Josh Clarke (Salem, Ore.), Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.), Natalie Haddix (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Jason Hardrath (Baker City, Ore.), Ashlee Jensen (Yube City, Calif.), Melissa Malone (Lake Forest, Calif.), Jessica Schell (Molalla, Ore.) and Taylor Wyatt (Dallas, Ore.). Allen graduated in May 2010.
