Warrior men break losing streak

By Daniel Flores

Right as the basketball left senior Ben Sisler’s hand, time expired on the game block. The ball fell through the hoop and gave the Warriors the victory over Northwest University on Feb 1 with a final score of 78-75 in overtime.

It was after a timeout with the score tied at 75 that the Warriors in-bounded the ball. With nine seconds left, it took a while for the play to develop, but the ball finally fell into Sisler’s hands who took care of the rest. Sophomore guard Ben Potloff said, “The play didn’t exactly go the way Coach Sherwood drew it up on the board, but it got the job done and all that matters is that we won.”

“When the ball went through the hoop and the buzzer sounded, I almost didn’t believe it to be true,” said Sophomore Cameron Meier of the game-winning shot. “It seemed like something you would only see on ESPN highlights.”

The first half went back and forth as Northwest jumped out in front quickly, but the Warriors answered back to gain a 12-point lead. By the time the first half ended, Corban was looking at a ten-point lead going into the locker room.

In the second half the Eagles of Northwest came out ready to play as they cut the Warriors lead to three points. But Corban regained an eight-point lead and was able to hold it until the nine-minute mark when the Eagles tied the game at 56. Corban maintained a lead until Northwest tied it at 75. Then Sisler stepped up for that game-winning shot.

The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Warriors. Brothers Paul and Clay Martin each set career highs and led Corban with 17 points each. Junior Wade Douglas also added ten points along with a game-high 12 rebounds. Sisler finished with 11 points.

“The basketball team has kind-of been having a rough year, but I think this victory was definitely what the basketball team ant the student body needed,” said Junior Mark Schubert.
