Baseball team looks hopeful

With spring on the horizon, Corban’s baseball team is looking to improve on last year’s rebuilding season. Capitalizing on four returning players who received all-conference recognition and second-year coach Nate Mayben’s revitalizing energy, the Warrior squad looks to reap the rewards of an intense off- season practice.

Most of the spring’s pre-season workouts have been spent indoors, as Warrior pitchers threw off indoor mounds, and other players spent countless hours on batting cage fundamentals.

Senior pitcher Jordan Emery remarked, “All this work indoors will hopefully pay dividends and give us an advantage over our opponents in these early season games.”

A major note of interest is the acquisition of transfer shortstop Daniel Flores. Pitcher Jordan Emery went on to say, “Flores will be a key part of the team as he is a great defender and one of the team’s better hitters. The team should be strong defensively up the middle.”

An aspect of this year’s squad that will be immediately tested is the team’s overall youth. A total of eight players are incoming freshman, some of whom will immediately get playing time.

“(Coach) Mayben has done a really good job of pushing us everyday to get better and not settle,” freshman Taylor Wyatt said. “I think our strong point this year is going to be our pitching and defense. We have a good pitching staff anchored by some veterans along with some really strong young guys.”

Emery noted that the Cascade Collegiate Conference is a difficult region, for it has several institutions that consistently put out solid teams. He stressed that he and his squad will be playing the toughest schedule he has seen in his four years as a Warrior.

Optimistic from coming off a solid training regimen, the Corban Baseball team looks to make a name for itself in the ‘08 season.
