If the thought of jogging on the treadmill or using the elliptical machine one more time has lost its appeal, then it might be time to switch your workout to something that doesn’t feel like a second job.
Former President John F. Kennedy once said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body; it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”
So what exactly would be a “creative intellectual activity?” Just off campus, there is a world of dynamic fun and fitness waiting to be discovered.
Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4b says, “There is a season for everything under heaven; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Right now, it’s time to dance! One fabulous place less than 15 minutes from the college is RJ Dance Studio. Whether you want to dance to burn off a few extra calories or you want to learn dance seriously, this studio is the place to go. It offers everything from Latin to swing to ballroom.
Instructors RJ Wilson and Lora LaMon give careful and special attention to all their dancers. This studio also offers mixed music dancing every Tuesday evening for only $5. According to healthstatus.com, a person with a weight of 150 pounds, participating in 30 minutes of light or moderate dance will burn between 200 and 300 calories.
Taekwondo is another alternative workout option. Student Carson Clews trained in Songahm Taekwondo for 11 years and has been a teacher for the past 7 ½ years.
“One of the neat things about taekwondo is that you aren't competing against anyone,” he said. “You can if you want at a tournament, but you aren't being compared to the other students. Training does not test your coordination against an opponent to find who is better or worse (as many sports do) but it improves your coordination.”
Through lunging and kicking, taekwondo offers a serious cardio workout as well as emotional benefits. The improvement that comes through practicing includes a boost in confidence, focus and discipline and self-esteem Clews said.
“Even if a distraction comes up, you keep your eye on your target … also, when you have to learn how to use every part of your body to generate power and maintain balance, it forces you to focus not just with your eyes, but with your mind. If such sports as dance and martial arts don’t suit you, there are many other options.
How about bowling? According to fitday.com, bowling burns an estimated 115 calories per hour. One bowling center that students regularly enjoy is Firebird Lanes Bowling Center. Firebird Lanes offers xtreme bowling which takes place on weekends and late nights.According to amf.com, extreme bowling is “an adventure of lights, great music, wild bowling challenges, and (of course) your favorite food & beverages.”
Also offered are discounts for college students and groups. While bowling is not the most aggressive physical workout, it offers a degree of aerobic fitness, betters hand –eye coordination, flexibility and strength training.
