Golf teams back in the swing of things
By Nathan Furumasu
J-Lab Staff Writer
With a record breaking fall season under their Tiger Woods belt buckles, the golfers on the team are back into the swing of things for the spring.
“We played decently,” Josh Greenslade said. “Hopefully, we can continue to improve throughout the rest of the year.”
The first tournament of the year took place March 8-10 at the Pacific University Invitational, a two-day 36-hole tournament. The teams played at Meriwether National Golf Course (Aloha, Ore.) the first day, and then Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club (North Plains, Ore.) the next.
“It was an okay start to the season,” Head Coach Ron Sisler said. “We didn’t play our best, but there were signs of improvement.”
Coming off a stellar fall season, in which the men’s team set and broke the all-time low team score three times, “this was a good jumping off point,” Sisler said.
Both teams finished in fourth place for the tournament.
The women were led by Elizabeth Sherwin, who shot a two-day total of 199 and finished 18th individually. The team combined for a total 854 strokes for the tournament. The tournament-host, Pacific University, came away with the win, shooting a team score of 709, 22 strokes better than second place.
The men were led by Ben Sisler, who fired a two-day total of 153 and placed fourth in the tournament overall. The team finished with a combined total of 637. NCAA Division III Member Linfield took the title for the tournament with a two-day total of 593.
The teams participated in the Willamette Invitational last week. The women played a two-day tournament at OGA Golf Course (Woodburn, Ore.) over the weekend, and the men played 36 holes on Monday at Creekside Golf Club (Salem, Ore.).
Both teams will return to the course March 24-25 when they host the third Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament of the year. Both teams are currently in second place behind Concordia University in conference play. They will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday at Diamond Woods Golf Course (Monroe, Ore.)
