December — David Roberts

The December 2011 show in the Psalm Gallery consists of 12 selected plates from a collection of 120 plates that trace the courageous steps of Scottish artist David Roberts on an adventurous eleven-month journey from 1838-1839, through the Holy Land where he had permission to enter whichever sacred mosque or monument he desired. This unique view of Middle Eastern life in the 19th century is a uniquely fascinating study.

That such a privilege was granted a Christian only proves in what esteem he was held, and he prized this great privilege which fulfilled a cherished dream, by producing a wealth of exquisite drawings—later reproduced in lithography (as seen in this show). They not only do remarkable justice to the splendid and awe-inspiring beauty of the Holy Land, but also capture the spiritual essence of a land and culture steeped in so fascinating a biblical history.
