November/December Artist

We are happy to present the award-winning artwork of Salem resident, James Southworth.  His art is familiar to many in the art community in Oregon, and will be on display to Corban and the Salem community for the next few weeks.

Southworth states, “My  love of the creative process goes back, like most of us, to pre-school. I must have shown some potential as my parents enrolled me in art classes at the Portland Art Museum.  In college and dental school, I was known for my creative doodles in the corners of class notes.

In the late 90s, I rekindled my love of painting. I find continual joy in the whole artistic process (except framing)! Thinking of ideas, planning a piece, getting lost in the work late into the night, the struggle to resolve and finish a piece, and the reaction of others to my work.

Why do I use pastels? The thick luxuriant colors, the expressive marks and the textural feel of the pastel sticks seem to suit me well.

Although, by definition, I am self taught, I find great inspiration in  Cezanne’s use of visual space, Wolf Kahn’s evocation of light and color, Josef Alber’s abstractions, and Johannis Itten’s color theory.  Most importantly to me, I am the father of three grown children and have been happily married to Jean for 26 years.”
