Visiting high schoolers impressed with Corban’s friendliness

PIET VAN WEEL - High school juniors and seniors register for Corban Experience on Feb. 9-10.

More than 140 high school juniors and seniors who sampled college life during Corban Experience this month said they were most impressed with the friendliness of Corban students and the school’s chapel services.

“We’ve received the high school kids’ evaluations, and, probably the two top answers were ‘friendly people’ and ‘chapel,’” says Sandy Van Dyk, coordinator of the event. “They sensed the caring people here on campus and really appreciated the chapel experience.”

Held three times per year, Corban Experience is a chance for high schoolers to experience college life before they make enrollment decisions. For 24 hours, they attend classes, tour campus and enjoy entertainment provided by current students and staff. To complete their immersion, they stay overnight in the dorms.

The next Corban Experience is scheduled for March 9-10. It’s designed for high school sophomores and juniors and their parents.

At the Feb. 9-10 event, admissions office staff members asked the high schoolers to share their interests and purposely matched them with Corban students who are studying potential majors or playing the same sports. Additionally, visiting athletes met current team members, as the men’s and women’s soccer teams and baseball and softball teams were recruiting.

High schoolers came from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California and Alaska.

“We want to give the students a taste of college life, so that’s why we encourage them to stay the night,” Van Dyk said. “We want them to see if Corban’s a good fit. Above all, it’s important that we reflect Christ’s love.”

Students weren’t the only campus visitors during Corban Experience. More than 75 parents also attended. They accompanied their children to classes, met professors and attended the a parent coffee. At the event, parents questioned and listened to a panel of six current students.

Other attractions included a financial aid workshop, a worship session led by a Corban band and Christian comedian Tim Hawkins.

In addition to full-time staff, eight students who work in the admissions office also helped run Corban Experience. The rest of the student body was notified about the 24-hour event, and many students took time to welcome the visitors.

“Our students were amazing and helpful with making them feel welcome,” said Heidi Stowman, admissions director. “One visitor said she saw Jesus in everyone she met.”
