More than 70 junior high volunteers and their adult leaders from six churches were on campus the week of July 12-18, to spruce up two areas of need. Formerly called HEAT, the group, "Equip," mixed work, on and off campus, with fellowship and Bible study with part of their emphasis being "Peer Care, Peer Share."
Working with Campus Operations staff, the students spent just over two days weeding and applying bark-dust to areas around the campus.
Western Baptist alumni Geoff Pfeil ('96), a youth pastor at Salem 's First Baptist Church, said this activity is wonderful experience in many ways for these young people.
"Equip is more than about just working together," he said. "We're instilling principles to teach them to create an environment of love and understanding as Christ's followers. If their peers and others know they care for them, no matter what, then it enhances their ability to share the good news of Christ with anyone."
Other churches involved with Equip included First Baptist in Corvallis, Portland's Trinity Fellowship, Grace Baptist, St. Helens, and two other churches from Bremerton, Wash., and Whittier Hills, California. |
