Parent Weekend Attracts Record Number of Parents

This year's Parent Weekend attracted a record number of parents to WB's campus, Nov. 7-8, as 146 family members representing 68 students visited.

Fifty-four parents attended the Friday afternoon reception hosted by Reno and Linda Hoff while over 30 attended Nathan Warthan's financial aid workshop. Nancy Hedberg, Vice President for Student Life, was very pleased with the turnout.

"More than 100 attended the Saturday morning brunch and heard Jo Strauch and Joel Hergert provide special music. Our ASWBC President, Paul Myers, gave his testimony and Bryce Bernard gave an excellent talk about the role of parents during the college years," Nancy said. Doug West served as master of ceremonies.

On Friday parents were busy attending Chapel, classes, athletic events, an evening mosaic music concert, and of course, visiting their student(s).

"They all got a little taste of life at WB and were able to see what students are doing," said Joany Haws, Parent Weekend coordinator. "It's always fun for parents to see what life is like on campus."

This is not the first time Bill and Lynn Cox of Yakima, Wash. have visited a Christian college. Their daughter Holly Steward recently transferred from California. Both parents appreciated the sincere warm welcome they received. They noticed and were thankful for the caring people on campus.

"In Holly's science class Dr. (Grant) Tipton is excited about what he's teaching which makes students more interested. He opens class with prayer and we feel that's important," said Bill Cox. His wife said that beng at WB has already made a difference for Holly.

"She's already decided what ministry she'll study (youth) and seems well grounded and excited about being here," Lynn added.

Luke Curtis' mother, Paula, said she and her husband have felt God's presence on campus each time they have visited.

"We come from a small town (Gold Beach) and the solid Christian influences outside our home are fewer than here on campus. We know this is where Luke wants to be. He seems very grounded and settled here and he has many friends that we enjoy," she said. "He's also become very grateful for what he has."

Nancy also gave special thanks to ARAMARK and Campus Operations for their extra work, to the student greeters, to the faculty/staff table hosts, and to faculty members for welcoming parents into their classrooms. "This was a great team effort."
