Record Numbers Attend Western Weekend --Shelly Duke, Jefferson (Ore.) Christian High School Wins $250 Scholarship
The visiting high school students came from cities and towns in neighboring western states. They attended classes, spoke with students and faculty members, took part in special activities and asked questions. While visiting the students had access to everything on campus. Most of the visitors were hosted by WB students. Event coordinator Shirley Yuranek said visitors enjoyed some creative and fun some activities that included a concert presented by WB's music department, basketball games, and WB's fall play, Pilgrim, was a huge hit. The professor question and answer time was also appreciated by all student and parent visitors. "What these high schoolers appreciated most was the chance to just meet and visit with our students and faculty," Shirley said. "We can show potential students plenty of interesting things, but it's the people at WB who create the interest that helps bring new students to campus. We also has several sets of parents who visited and were happy they came." One visitor, Chad Young, 21, of Tacoma, Wash., has applied and hopes to enroll next fall. He is currently a soldier in the US Army stationed at Fort Lewis. "If my unit isn't called up I should be able to be here next September because my enlistment is up in July," he said. "I want to study psychology and go into youth ministries, but I'm also waiting to see what God has planned." Western Weekend is held twice each school year (Nov. and Feb.) and is designed to give potential freshmen a look at the educational opportunities and college lifestyle at WB. |
