For many writers, seclusion is the only way to bring a creative thought to life. Harvester Island in Alaska is nearly as remote as it comes.
Between Aug. 31 and Sept. 7, 2013, Corban Writer-in-Residence Gina Ochsner will co-lead an intensive writers’ workshop with Lesley Leland Fields on the tiny remote island. With just 10 registrations being accepted, Ochsner said the one-on-one mentoring and coaching opportunity in the serene coastal wilderness will be unique.
Participants will need to have a work in progress before arriving.
“We will talk about some of the roadblocks and stumbling blocks they are facing as writers” Ochsner said. “I will work intently with the writers and help them troubleshoot. We’ll be there together, living close together, sharing meals together. I’ll be able to check in with them and see if what we are doing is helping and if not, try something new.”
Mornings will include personalized writing workshops and the afternoons will be filled with up-close whale watching, wildlife viewing, hiking, fishing and more. Evenings will include fresh seafood dinners along with readings and special events.
It’s not only an opportunity for Ochsner to coach others, it’s also a way to sharpen her skills as a writing instructor, she said. Additionally, she sees it as an opportunity to share her love of Jesus Christ.
“Not all of the people there will be Christians, but I see it as our call as artists to share the light,” she said.
Ochsner is the author of several books including the award winning titles “People I Wanted to Be” and “The Necessary Grace to Fall.” She recently finished her novel “Thicker than Water,” which she anticipates will be published in 2013.
Fields is the author of eight books including “The Spirit of Food” and “Surviving the Island of Grace.” She also writes for Christianity Today and the blog “Far-aField Notes” and is a professional photographer. Fields and her husband operate a commercial fishery business on Harvester Island.
