Corban University prepares for 2nd annual MLK Serve Day

On Jan. 16, 2012, more than 250 Corban University students accepted a challenge to give back to the community and volunteered thousands of hours toward this endeavor.
On Jan. 21, students will once again pack gloves, shovels, brooms, dustpans and more to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Junior and give back to the Salem area community. Fifteen different projects are planned including garden preparation in Marion-Polk Food Share’s five community gardens, trail improvement in several Salem parks, helping in the South Salem Habitat for Humanity ReStore and more.
The scheduled community service projects include:
Marion Polk Food Share Gardens
Volunteers will tidy up the garden and prepare for spring planting
Sunnyslope Community Garden – 9 a.m.to Noon
- South Salem Friends Community Garden – 9 a.m. to Noon
- River Street Community Garden - 9 a.m. to Noon
- Redeemer Community Garden – 9 a.m. to Noon
- Center Street Community Garden – 9 a.m. to Noon
Historic Deepwood Estates - 9 a.m. to Noon
Volunteers will work in the garden and clean and organize indoors
Salem Classical Fencing - 9 a.m. to Noon
Volunteers will clean and tidy the fencing studio and may include painting and organizing
Habitat for Humanity ReStore – 9 a.m. to Noon/2 to 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers will canvas the neighborhood with ReStore information. May include cleaning and organizing the ReStore donation and retail location.
HandsOn Candide Community Garden – 9 a.m. to Noon/2 to 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers will assist with garden clean up and possibly paint a bench
City of Salem Parks –
- Orchard Heights Park – 9 a.m. to Noon
- Geer Park – 9 a.m. to Noon
- Minto Brown Park – 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers will resurface a walking trail with wood chips
Mid-Valley Literacy Center - 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers will work in teams of 2-3 to develop lesson plans for substitute teachers (content has already been decided)
Tierra Rose Senior Living – 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers will help with landscaping projects around the senior living community
Helping Hands - 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers will help clean the shop and sort donations
