Corban crew serves the Union Gospel Mission
May 14, 2010
Corban University students partnered with Campus Dining (ARAMARK) employees for the second time during this academic year to donate meals to the Union Gospel Mission (UGM). Representatives from the organizations then formed a volunteer crew to cook, serve, and cleanup for the approximately 80–100 people who attended the UGM service and lunch on May 6.
Director of Food Service Tamra Taylor and Common Grounds Manager Brent Fahsholz organized the Corban volunteers. Taylor said, “We had so many turn out that I had to send some of them home — there wasn’t anything for them to do.”
Five ARAMARK employees and nine Corban students remained to prepare and serve a “summer lunch” of oven-baked chicken, potato salad, corn on the cob, green salad, fresh fruit and frosted banana cake for dessert. Most of the food was prepared at the University’s dining hall and then transported in hotboxes and crates. The final preparations were made onsite and served by Corban students alongside UGM program participants.
Taylor chose May 6, the National Day of Prayer, for the volunteer event. She said, “It was an intentional choice; I suppose it was a personal choice. I don’t think we do enough to celebrate the National Day of Prayer and to honor it as a country. Sharing it with the Mission was my own little way to celebrate it.”
The first time Corban students donated meals through Campus Dining was in December 2009. They raised money to purchase 261 meals for Salem locals who ate Christmas Day dinner at the UGM. The students purchased $3.00 “value meals,” with cash, check, or “Warrior Dollars,” which are on-campus meal-plan dollars, redeemable at the dining hall and coffee shop.
That December enterprise of donating end-of-the-semester “Warrior Dollars” for value meals was so successful, Taylor was asked to run it again at the close of spring semester. In April the students purchased 115 value meals, raising a total of $345.
Taylor said, “I would like to thank the whole Corban community for pitching in with this, for both the event in December and now this one. It was truly a group effort.”
