Corban undergrads will have biblical studies minor

Recently the Academic Council unanimously approved a proposal to organize the general requirement of 24 Bible/theology credits into a minor titled “biblical studies.” Starting fall 2009, all graduates of the traditional undergraduate program will have this minor on their transcripts.
Provost Matt Lucas says, “This is a good and important decision for us as we move into the future.”
The Academic Council, which is led by the Provost and made up of department chairs and deans, the Vice President for Student Life and the Library Director, cited several reasons for the reorganization. Primarily, it reflects the work that all Corban undergrads are already accomplishing. Furthermore, it reinforces the College’s core value of Bible-centered training.
In regard to the Council’s decision, Lucas responds, “It solidifies our educational philosophy and the importance we place on biblical integration — the minor serves as a foundation for disciplines. One cannot do biblical integration without a good Bible and theology background.”
Another factor, Lucas says, relates to marketing. “The minor further distinguishes Corban from other Christian institutions as we express our identity to prospective students and external stakeholders.”
Steve Hunt, Vice President for Marketing, says, “Having every student receive a minor in biblical studies affirms our historical commitment to a biblically integrated curriculum.”
The official proposal originated earlier this spring with Assistant Professor of Business Jon Meyers (’99). He says, “It’s going to give students additional credibility as they seek to minister in their local churches and communities.”
“I hope this change will help provide a unified sense of purpose among Corban students,” he continues. “An individual student may be an accounting major, a baseball player or an ASB officer, but now every traditional undergrad on campus is also a biblical studies minor.”
