Dr. Janine Allen has accepted the position of Dean of Education and will begin her duties on July 1. She succeeds Dr. Matt Lucas, who moves to the office of College Provost, also on July 1.

Allen comes from Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon where she has served as the Dean of the School of Education and Counseling and associate professor in education during the last five years. Prior to that, she taught in public schools in California and Oregon. Her educational background includes a B.A. from Loyola Marymount University, M.A. in curriculum development from California State University, and the Ed.D. in educational leadership from George Fox University in 2007.

“My research investigations are in the areas of teacher disposition and effective teaching, characteristics of teacher-leaders in the school community, and mentoring,” Allen explained. “I have spoken on the importance of mentorship in early career teacher retention, the impact of education philosophy on motivation of the teacher, and transformative leadership.”

Concerning her philosophy of teaching, Allen shared, “I believe good teaching is not just about techniques, but about whom we are when we teach, who we are when we relate to our students.”

“I am passionate about the Christian educator being in the public classroom,” she added. “I believe Christian educators can unequivocally influence the culture of the school community.”

According to Lucas, current Dean of Education, “She is a strong and dynamic leader who has already made a name for herself in teacher education circles in Oregon.”

Allen noted that Corban’s teaching program is highly respected in Oregon and throughout the Northwest, owing to its strength of preparation of students. She said that she sees strong, collaborative thinking and sound modeling in Corban’s education faculty.

“As Dean of Education, I see it as important to continue the work that Matt and Linda [Dr. Samek] have done. I would also like to continue to reach out to the community, providing professional development, endorsement programs, and mentoring for area teachers.”

Allen referred to the mission statement of the Education Program--to prepare educators who will serve in their school community, strive for professional excellence, think from a biblical worldview and pursue a life that glorifies God.

“I’ve always been drawn to that mission statement, especially as it relates to seeking truth and integrating it into people’s lives. It’s a picture of what is supposed to happen in the classroom. It aligns exactly with what I believe to be true.”

Corban College and Graduate School is ranked fifth by U.S.News & World Report in America’s Best Colleges, both as a Top School and Best Value among baccalaureate colleges in the West. Corban has been in the top ten schools of America’s Best Colleges for the last six years.
