In a graduation ceremony on April 26, Nancy Hedberg, Vice President for Student Life, received her Doctor of Ministry degree with an emphasis in leadership from Western Seminary.

Dr. Hedberg had presented her doctoral dissertation at Corban before friends, faculty and staff earlier this spring. Her topic was entitled, “Essence and Function: An Evaluative Study of the Theological Premise that Women Are Equal to Men in Essence but Permanently Subordinate in Function.” Dr. Gerry Breshears, Professor of Theology at Western Seminary, was present as Hedberg’s reader for her work.

In her abstract, Hedberg referred to the “gridlock in churches today regarding the role of women.” Her research included the study of current theology, what has been said down through the centuries, and what Scripture says on the topic, along with practical implications.Dr. Hedberg had presented her doctoral dissertation at Corban before friends, faculty and staff earlier this spring. “This has always been a very personally puzzling issue for me,” said Hedberg. “My doctoral work allowed me to focus on it and come to my own peace of mind about how God looks at women.”

She has already seen the benefits of her work when, “every once in a while, I’m asked to talk in a class on the role of women, or one-on-one, students will experience confusion on what their role is.”

Hedberg began working on her Master of Divinity degree at Western Seminary in 1998, which was required in order to begin her doctoral work. She began the D. Min. program in 2003 and received confirmation of her degree on April 11, 2008.
