SUMERIAN FIGURE

Replica of a Sumerian Figure from the Early Dynastic Period (3000-2500 BC). The original is of limestone. This statue is one of the finest examples known of Early Dynastic Sumerian sculpture. Despite its antiquity, however, it blends perfectly with modern decors and there is a timeless quality about its comic-serious gaze.

When this figure was found under a temple floor near Baghdad, the one eye and one side of the base were missing (The base has been restored in reproduction). The beard was a distinguishing mark of members of the priestly hierarchy and the pantheon of gods in the mighty civilization of ancient Sumer. Purchased from the Worcester Art Museum, England.
