Warriors fall to The Evergreen State College in shootout

October 26, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – For the third straight season, Corban College and The Evergreen State College met in the 1st round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference post-season tournament and this time they needed a shootout to decide which team would advance to the championship game on Saturday.

After playing 110 minutes and battling to a 1-1 tie, the Warriors and Geoducks went through a ten-player shootout before Evergreen won, 4-3, to advance to the conference finals against Concordia on Saturday in Portland.

The scoring began in the 11th minute when Evergreen’s Alice Dietz took a pass from Jenine Adam, dribbled to the middle of the field, and rifled a low shot towards the right corner and into the back of the net for the early 1-goal advantage.

In the 55th minute, senior Kari Swenson (Fallon, Nev.) took a pass from sophomore Allison Buswell (Salem, Ore.), trapped the ball with her chest, and unleashed a shot to the lower right hand corner for her 5th goal of the season tying the game at 1-apiece.

Over the final fifty-five minutes, both teams battled with neither getting a good scoring opportunity until the 107th minute when Corban junior Lyndsey Hawk (Medford, Ore.) took a through ball and went one-on-one with Evergreen’s keeper only to have her shot pushed beyond the end line squashing any hope of the Warriors finishing the game in double overtime.

Following the two “golden goal” periods, Corban and Evergreen went to a shootout with Evergreen’s April MacKay beginning by beating junior keeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) for the early lead.  Senior Danae Peirce (Olympia, Wash.) opened the shootout for Corban and her hopes of evening the score were negated when the Geoducks’ keeper made a diving save.  Evergreen’s Lena Ishii put the Geoducks up 2-0 when she netted the third shot of the shootout.  Corban senior Sarah Officer (Steilacoom, Wash.) pulled the Warriors within 1 thanks to her shootout goal.  On the fifth attempt, Evergreen’s Elizabeth Lieberknecht hit the left side post and had the shot ricochet away from the net, allowing Corban the opportunity to tie the shootout.  Freshman Amber Wihtol (Medford, Ore.) took advantage and knotted the duel at 2-apiece when she scored on the sixth attempt overall and third by Corban.  Evergreen’s Kate Green put the Geoducks up 3-2 thanks to her goal before Buswell knotted the shootout again at 3-all.  Evergreen’s final shooter Maeve Dempsey put the Geoducks up 4-3, which left the ending up to the face off between Evergreen’s goalkeeper Cathy Stewart and Corban’s Hawk (pictured above).  Hawk sent a low shot towards the right corner, but Stewart made a diving save that propelled the Geoducks into the championship game thanks to the 4-3 shootout win.

Despite the shootout, Corban improves to 9-7-3 overall and Evergreen improves to 10-1-5 overall.  The Warriors wait to see the result of Saturday’s Concordia-Evergreen championship game to know if their season will continue via a berth into the NAIA Region I Tournament.
