BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – With the possibility of not making the Cascade Collegiate Conference post-season tournament looming in the air, Corban’s women’s soccer team took care of business beating Oregon Tech, 3-1, behind a 2 goal, 1 assist performance from sophomore Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) on Friday afternoon.
Waunch (pictured right) began the scoring in the 6th minute when she quickly one-touched a combo pass from senior Sarah Officer (Steilacoom, Wash.) and sophomore Sarah Whaley (Gresham, Ore.) into the lower corner for her 5th goal of the season.
In the 34th minute, Oregon Tech’s Lindsey Carmichael tied the game at 1-all when she netted a pass from Lindsay Selle into the lower left corner, which ended the scoring for both teams over the first 45 minutes of play.
Just over 12 minutes into the second half, Waunch scored her second goal of the game when she took a through ball from junior Lyndsey Hawk (Medford, Ore.), dribbled to the middle of the field, and rifled a shot from 16 yards out into the lower left hand corner of the net for the game-winner.
With 17:10 left on the clock, Oregon Tech nearly tied the game at 2-all, but Corban’s junior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) made what would be the game-clinching save when she dove to her right and tipped the ball into unguarded territory allowing the defense to clear the ball without any damage being done.
Following the diving save of its 3rd-year keeper, Corban added an extra cushion in the 74th minute when freshman Leana Pomeroy (Federal Way, Wash.) scored her 1st collegiate goal off a cross from Waunch that the 5-foot-9 rookie slid under OIT’s keeper.
Mendenhall played the entire game and recorded 5 saves, while Nicole Pence recorded a game-high 13 saves for the Hustlin’ Owls.
With the win, Corban improves to 8-7-2 overall, 6-5 in CCC play. Oregon Tech falls to 7-10-0 overall, 4-7 in CCC play. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, October 22nd, when they host Southern Oregon beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
Five Corban College seniors and one junior will be honored at halftime of their final regular season home game. Both the Warriors and Red Raiders will be battling to gain home-field advantage for the 1st round of the CCC post-season tournament.
