ASHLAND, Ore. – Freshman defender Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) ended an overtime affair on a penalty kick, as Corban's women's soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive with a double overtime victory, 2-1, over the Raiders of Southern Oregon on Saturday.
Junior Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) scored Corban's only other goal in the 37th minute on an assit from senior Charissa Bernard (Salem, Ore.). On the play, Bernard crossed the ball to Waunch, who beat Southern Oregon's goal keeper with a shot to the upper left corner of the goal for her team-leading 6th goal of the season.
Despite leading for much of the second half, Corban was forced into overtime after the Raiders were rewarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Judi Dietz finished the opportunity for the host Raiders of Southern Oregon to force the extra periods.
Corban showed their desire to hold onto a potential playoff spot in the overtime minutes, as they pressured the goal and were awarded the penalty kick in the 104th minute when senior forward/defender Lyndsey Hawk (Medford, Ore.) was fouled in the box. Unfortunately for both Hawk and the Warriors, the 5-foot-2 combo player was injured on the play and could not take the PK. That opened the door for Matthews to clinch the road win for the Warriors. The 5-foot-8 first-year player was able to find the back of the net for his first collegiate goal en route to securing the much-needed victory.
Senior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) picked up 7 saves for the Warriors, while Melanie Hopkins grabbed a game-high 10 saves of her own for the Raiders.
With the win, Corban improved to 6-11-0 overall, 4-4-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon University falls to 4-9-1 overall, 1-5-1 in CCC play. The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, October 18th, when they travel to Warner Pacific College for a conference match-up with the Knights beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Portland Christian High School. If Corban can come away with the victory, the Warriors could find themselves as the 4th seed in the Cascade Collegiate Conference post-season tournament and in all likelihood would host an opening round home playoff game on Saturday, October 21st, in Salem with the time still to be determined.
