KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –Juniors Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) and Sarah Whaley (Gresham, Ore.) teamed for the early lead, but Corban's women's soccer team watched the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech score two straight goals for the 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon.
With the heart-breaking loss, the Warriors' hopes of hosting a first-round playoff game are dwindling with two games remaining in the regular season. As of right now, Corban has a firm grip on the 6th and final playoff, but could become the 4th seed depending on the outcome of its final two road games and Evergreen's final regular season contest with Northwest next Wednesday.
Corban got the game's first goal in the 20th minute when Wanuch received a pass from Whaley. After receiving the pass, Waunch turned and unloaded an open shot that found the back of the net for her team-leading 5th goal of the season.
Just over twenty-five minutes later, Oregon Tech got on the board on a goal by Brandy Bocchi from Sarah Brown. Brown began the play by taking a corner kick and sent a lofting pass onto the awaiting head of Bocchi. Bocchi header the ball over the out-stretched arms of Corban's keeper to knot the game at 1-all.
With under ten minutes remaining in the game, Bocchi scored her second goal of the game in the 82nd minute, as she deflected a shot off Corban's net-minder. Once she gathered the rebound, Bocchi netted the game-winning goal that put Oregon Tech into a tie with Corban for 5th place in the conference standings.
Senior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) registered 4 saves, while Oregon Tech's Jaclyn Unruh recorded a game-high 6 saves en route to picking up the victory.
Corban is now 5-11-0 overall, 3-4-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech improves to 9-7-0 overall, 3-4-0 in CCC action. The Warriors return to action tomorrow, October 14th, when they continue their weekend in Southern Oregon with a conference match-up with the Red Raiders of Southern Oregon University beginning at 4:00 p.m.
