Warriors grab first place in division with win over Knights

October 12, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – In a battle for first place in the South Division standings, Corban’s women’s soccer team used two goals in a 29-second span to defeat Warner Pacific, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Kari Swenson (Fallon, Nev.) got the scoring started in the 32nd minute when she headed in a one-two-combo pass from fellow senior Sarah Officer (Steilacoom, Wash.) and junior Lyndsey Hawk (Medford, Ore.).  Hawk began the play with a pass down the right side to a streaking Officer, who proceeded to cross the ball toward the net.  Swenson came from the opposite side of the field and headed in a deflection off the Knights’ keeper for her 4th goal of the season.

Sophomore Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) netted Corban’s second goal in the 47th minute off an assist from junior Nicole Hickman (Yakima, Wash.) and senior Danae Peirce (Olympia, Wash.).  Waunch finished off the trio effort flicking a cross from Hickman into the lower right hand corner.

Twenty-six seconds later, Peirce scored her 1st goal of the season when she one-timed a pass from Waunch and Officer into the upper left hand corner of the net.

Warner Pacific got on the board in the 74th minute when Michelle Wynne scooted a quick shot underneath Corban’s keeper sophomore Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) for the Knights’ lone goal of the game.  Allen had her scoreless streak snapped at 237 minutes, which dated back to the Warriors’ game against Evergreen on September 21st.

In the 80th minute, Hawk (pictured above) took a pass from sophomore Allison Buswell (Salem, Ore.) and scored her 2nd career goal.  Buswell intercepted an attempted clearing pass from Warner Pacific’s keeper, found a wide-open Hawk in front of the net, who then scored the game’s final goal.

With the win, Corban improves to 6-7-1 overall, 5-5 in Cascade Collegiate play.  Warner Pacific falls to 4-9 overall, 4-6 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, October 15th, when they travel north to take on the NAIA’s No. 6-ranked Simon Fraser in a 4:00 p.m. match up.
