September 30, 2005

CALDWELL, Idaho – Corban College’s women’s soccer team needed only a ten minute span to snap a four-game losing streak thanks to two goals by freshman Amber Wihtol (Medford, Ore.) and a goal by senior Kari Swenson (Fallon, Nev. ) en route to a 3-0 win over Albertson College of Idaho on Friday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Corban got the scoring started in the 62nd minute when Wihtol (pictued right) took a pass via a free kick from junior Kathleen Studenny (Gresham, Ore.).  Wihtol, who is one of the tallest members of the Warriors’ squad, anticipated Studenny’s pass and proceeded to flick the ball towards the right post and into the back of the net.

Six minutes later, Swenson scored her second goal of the season in the 68th minute off an assist from sophomore Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.).  Waunch led Swenson with a pass that opened the field up for the 5-foot-4 junior, who rifled a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, giving the Warriors a two-goal advantage.

In the 72nd minute, Wihtol capped the scoring when she netted her 2nd goal of the game on another assist from Waunch.  With the goal, Wihtol tied senior Sarah Officer (Steilacoom, Wash.) for the team lead in goals with 3.

Sophomore goalkeeper Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) started the game in goal for Corban and recorded 3 saves.  Junior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) finished the game and recorded 3 saves.

Both teams recorded 17 shots, while Corban took the edge in shots on goal (12-7) and corner kicks (5-2).

With the win, Corban improves to 3-7-1 overall, 2-5 in Cascade Collegiate play.  Albertson falls to 6-5-1 overall, 4-2-1 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, October 1st, when they begin the trip back to Salem with a game against Eastern Oregon in La Grande beginning at 5:00 p.m.
