SALEM, Ore. - In the first-ever "Soccer Under the Lights" double header, Corban's women's soccer team got a pair of late goals by junior Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) and freshman Marissa Walter (Elk Grove, Calif.) en route to gaining a 2-0 victory over Cascade on Thursday.
With the score knotted at 0-0, the Warriors struck first in the 81st minute when Waunch hooked up with fellow Washingtonian and freshman midfielder Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.) on a through pass. Once Waunch got the ball, she dribbled left, and with one swift kick found the back of the net into the lower right corner.
Less than three minutes later, Walter scored her first collegiate goal when she gathered a pass from Waunch and then one-touched a shot into the upper right corner for the game's final score.
Corban's senior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) registered her 14th career shutout, as she needed to make a mere 4 saves (all in the first half).
After watching the visiting Lady Thunderbirds control most of the offensive flow in the first half, the Warriors seized control over the remaining forty-five minutes en route to ending a five-game losing streak.
In the second half, Corban out shot Cascade, 17-1, and were awarded five corner kicks to the Lady T-birds zero.
Corban is now 3-5-0 overall, 1-0-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Cascade is now 1-5-0 overall, 0-1-0 in CCC play. The Warriors returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16th, when they host conference rival and the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Concordia beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
