Corban opens home conference season with win over Cascade

September 13, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – Senior Sarah Officer (Steilacoom, Wash.) scored 2 goals and handed out 1 assist in Corban’s 5-0 win over Cascade College on Tuesday afternoon to open its home conference schedule.

After a scoreless first half, Corban began the scoring in the 58th minute when sophomore Sarah Whaley (Gresham, Ore.) tapped in her first goal of the season on a pass from Officer.

In the 61st minute, Officer scored the first of her two goals on an assist from senior Kari Swenson (Fallon, Nev.).  Swenson passed the ball through two defenders allowing Officer to run onto the ball, dribble towards Cascade’s keeper, and poke it into the lower right corner.

Less than one minute later, Officer took a one-two combo pass from fellow senior Danae Peirce (Olympia, Wash.) and freshman Amber Wihtol (Medford, Ore.) and put the ball into the lower left corner of the goal for her team-leading 3rd goal of the season.

In the 77th minute, senior Lyndsey Hawk (Medford, Ore.) scored her first collegiate goal after sending a bouncing ball into the back of the net off a corner kick by Wihtol (pictured above).  Hawk, who transferred to Corban from Point Loma Nazarene University following her freshman season, appeared in 52 games in a Warrior uniform prior to her first collegiate goal.

Sophomore Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) capped the scoring when she scored her 2nd goal of the season in the 78th minute on an assist by freshman Leana Pomeroy (Federal Way, Wash.).  Pomeroy found a streaking Waunch down the sideline, who proceeded to dribble the ball 30 yards before firing a shot past Cascade’s keeper.

Junior Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) and sophomore Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) split time in goal for Corban with Mendenhall recording the only save.  Meanwhile, Cascade’s Dani Ferris recorded a game-high 21 saves.

Corban dominated all three offensive categories – shots (45-2), shots on goal (26-1), and corner kicks (8-1) – but could not put the ball into the net until the final half.

With the win, Corban improves to 2-3-1 overall, 1-1-0 in CCC play, while Cascade falls to 0-5-0 overall, 0-5-0 in CCC play.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, September 16th, when they travel south to Ashland for a match up with Southern Oregon beginning at 4:00 p.m.
