LA MIRADA, Calif. - Making its first trip to Southern California since the 1997 season, Corban's women's soccer team suffered a tough 2-0 loss at the hands of the Hawks of San Diego Christian in a neutral site game at Biola University on Monday.
Almost ten years ago, then-Western Baptist traveled to Southern California for a three-game series with The Master's College, Pacific Christian College (now Hope International University), and Biola University. On that trip, the Warriors went 2-1 thanks to an overtime victory (3-2) over The Master's College and an 8-0 win over Pacific Christian.
On this trip things were not as similar, as Corban dropped both games played this weekend at Al Barbour Field on the campus of Biola University.
In this afternoon's contest, San Diego Christian struck first when Shannon Gibson scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute. Gibson snuck in behind Corban's senior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) after the original Hawk shot missed and found the back of a wide-open net for the game's first goal.
After a first half that saw 8 total shots (5 by SDCC and 3 by Corban) fly towards the opposing goals and a score of 1-0 in favor of the Southern California team, San Diego Christian put the nail in the coffin with a late goal.
In the 72nd minute, SDCC's Mary Willis teamed with Mercedes Ray on a through ball and unloaded a shot from 15 yards out past Mendenhall for the game's final goal.
Junior forward Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) led the Warriors with 3 shots (all on goal), while senior Charissa Bernard (Salem, Ore.) and junior Sarah Whaley (Gresham, Ore.) recorded 3 and 1 shot respectively.
Mendenhall started the game in goal for Corban, playing the first 77 minutes, before freshman Laurel Riggins (Saugus, Calif.) took over between the pipes for the final 13 minutes. Mendenhall recorded a game-high 4 saves, while Riggins notched a lone save.
San Diego Christian's goalkeeper Samantha Beveridge played the entire 90 minutes in goal and recorded a game-high 4 saves en route to securing the shut out.
Corban is now 2-5-0 on the season, while San Diego Christian remains unbeaten at 3-0-0. The Warriors returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 14th, when they begin Cascade Collegiate Conference play against Cascade College in the first-ever "Soccer Under the Lights" double-header beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Warrior Field.
