Corban takes nationally-ranked Carroll to double overtime
September 9, 2005
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. - Junior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) held the NAIA’s No. 19-ranked Saints of Carroll College scoreless through 110 minutes of play and helped Corban College secure a 0-0 tie on Friday afternoon at Warrior Field.
Despite being out played in all three offensive categories – total shots (30-8), shots on goal (14-7), and corner kicks (15-0) – the Warriors did not let up and had a chance to score on numerous occasions, but nothing seemed to bounce right for Corban.
Senior defender Kari Swenson (Fallon, Nev.) and freshman midfielder Amber Withol (Medford, Ore.) led Corban with 2 shots apiece, while four other Warriors recorded one shot each.
Mendenhall came up huge near the end of regulation when Carroll’s Jenni Annicchiarico went one-on-one with just over 4 minutes left and unloaded a shot low, but Mendenhall stretched out and secured the save allowing the game to head into extra periods.
In the first overtime, Carroll seemed to control much of the offensive flow, but the Warrior defense stepped up once again and held the Saints scoreless forcing a fourth and final period.
Corban seemed to control much of the offensive flow in the second overtime period, as junior Nicole Hickman (Yakima, Wash.) and senior Danae Peirce (Olympia, Wash.) pushed the tempo towards Carroll’s goal, but could not crack the Saints’ defense, which resulted in the game ending in a scoreless tie.
Mendenhall ended the game with 13 saves, while Carroll goalkeeper Nikki Skaggs posted 7 saves. Each keeper played the entire 110 minutes and despite the very physical game (28 fouls for Corban versus 23 fouls for Carroll), neither team backed down.
Corban improves to 1-2-1 overall, while Carroll improves to 3-1-1. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, September 10th, when they travel to Willamette for a 7:00 p.m. contest. |
