Golden goal ends overtime affair with Wildcats of Linfield

September 6, 2006

Senior Kathleen Studenny knotted her first goal since the 2004 season today against Linfield, while registering 4 shots (2 on goal).

SALEM, Ore. – Despite goals by seniors Kathleen Studenny (Estacada, Ore.) and Charissa Bernard (Salem, Ore.), Corban's women's soccer team could not hold off the Wildcats of Linfield in a 3-2 overtime loss on Wednesday evening.

Studenny scored the game's first goal in the 19th minute on a rocket shot from 15 yards out that sailed past the out-stretched Linfield keeper into the upper left corner. The goal was Studenny's first since the 2004 season.

The Warriors headed into halftime with the 1-goal advantage, but Linfield struck with the tying goal in the 56th minute when Rachel Miles rifled a direct kick from 10 yards out into the lower right corner.

With the visiting Wildcats controlling most of the offensive flow during the second half, Corban took one final run at the goal in the 86th minute. Junior Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) dribble past two defenders, slid a through ball to a wide-open Bernard, who proceeded to crack a shot from just outside the 6-yard box into the lower left corner for what-seemed to be the game-winning goal.

With a never quit attitude, Linfield was awarded a direct kick in the waning minutes of the game just outside the penalty box. With two Wildcat players set up in a two-person wall formation, Caitlyn Jordan unloaded a shot, once the wall separated, from 18 yards out over the leaping Warrior keeper and into the upper left corner to knot the game at 2-all.

Playing the first overtime game of the season for either team, Corban struck first with its best scoring opportunity of the period when Bernard attempted to poke a shot by Linfield's keeper in the opening minutes.

Unfortunately for the Warriors that shot was saved and Linfield ended the game on its only scoring opportunity of the extra period. Kim Skelly went one-on-one with Corban's third keeper of the game -- senior Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) -- and slid a pass underneath to a wide-open Jordan, who promptly ended the game in the 94th minute via a shot into the lower left corner.

Corban's goalkeeper trio of freshman Laurel Riggins (Saugus, Calif.), freshman Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.), and Mendenhall combined for 4 saves, while Linfield's Allison Cartmill registered a game-high 3 saves.

Corban is now 2-3 overall, while Victoria finds itself at 2-1 overall.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, September 9th, when they travel to Southern California for a match-up with Golden State Athletic Conference member Biola beginning at 7:00 p.m. in La Mirada, California.
