SALEM, Ore. -
After playing three games in a span of five days, Corban's women's soccer team ended its busiest week of the season with a tough loss to the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Clan of Simon Fraser, 2-0, on Saturday at Warrior Field.
Over the past week, the Warriors have played games against the defending National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) champions Mount Vernon Nazarene, the 2007 NCCAA national runner-up The Master's College, and nationally-ranked Simon Fraser.
In today's game, the game was scoreless for the first 11-plus minutes before Simon Fraser's Caitlin Carruthers took a pass from Hailey Rawlings and netted the game's opening goal. Rawlings began the action by working through a couple Warrior defenders before sending a through ball onto the awaiting foot of Carruthers, who poked the ball past Corban's keeper.
Neither team was able to crack the opposing defense over the final 34 minutes of half, therefore resulting in the visiting Clan clinging to a one-goal lead at intermission.
In the second half, Corban seemed to control most of the offensive flow and had numerous chances to knot the game at 1-all. Unfortunately, the Warriors could not capitalize and watched as Simon Fraser tacked on an insurance goal in the 75th minute.
SFU's Marissa Antoniazzi teamed with Jacqueline Gant and Rawlings for the Clan's second goal of the game with exactly 24 minutes remaining in the contest. Rawlings began the play with a little touch pass to Gant, who took one dribble before lofting a pass to Antoniazzi. Antoniazzi ended the play with a flick shot up and over the out-stretched arms of the Warriors' net-minder for the final tally of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) recorded a game-high 9 saves in between the pipes for Corban, while Simon Fraser's Cassie Newbrook stopped both shots on goal that the Warriors sent her way en route to securing the shutout.
With the loss, Corban is now 1-3-0 overall. Meanwhile, Simon Fraser improves to 4-1-0 overall. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, September 8th, when they travel to Great Falls, Montana, for a match-up with Frontier Conference member the University of Great Falls beginning at 11:00 a.m.
