SALEM, Ore. – For the first time in the history of the Corban Classic, the host Warriors won two games and was declared the champion thanks to a 2-1 victory over NCAA Division II member Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon.

Two goals by junior Megan Waunch (Tumwater, Wash.) and senior Charissa Bernard (Salem, Ore.), as well as timely saves by senior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) helped Corban’s women’s soccer team capture its second straight victory to open the 2006 season.

Twenty-two seconds into the game, Waunch took a touch pass from sophomore Leana Pomeroy (Federal Way, Wash.) and freshman Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.) and slid the ball underneath the Crusaders’ keeper for the opening goal.

In the 11th minute, Bernard scored her second goal of the season when she teamed with Emerick and Waunch on a through ball.  The 5-foot-9 forward took the pass and blasted a shot into the upper right corner for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Northwest Nazarene’s Hannah Mohs pulled the Crusaders within a goal in the 54th minute when she teamed with Katy McNutt and Shanie Benner for her second goal of the season.

In the 65th minute, NNU was awarded a penalty kick that could have tied the game, but Mendenhall came up big.  Carlee Stinton’s shot was sent out-of-bounds via a dive to her left by the fourth-year keeper that sent the ball over the end line.  Mendenhall finished with a game-high 5 saves.

Nineteen minutes later, Corban had a chance to go up two goals but senior Lyndsey Hawk’s (Medford, Ore.) penalty kick was stopped by NNU keeper Amanda Merrell to keep the Crusaders within a goal.

Tough defense and timely offensive runs allowed Corban to hold onto the slim one-goal lead en route to picking up the victory.

Corban is now 2-0 overall, while Northwest Nazarene drops to 1-1 overall.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, September 1st, when they take on Rocky Mountain College in Olympia, Washington.
