Wilson surpasses 1,000-point plateau in win over Cavs

Senior Tosha Wilson became the first-ever member of the 1,000-point, 500 rebound, 500 assist club in women's basketball history tonight in Corban's one-sided victory over Concordia.

SALEM, Ore. -
Senior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career and fellow senior Jessi Norton (Redmond, Ore.) notched a game-high 21 points, as Corban's women's basketball team earned a 79-59 victory over the Cavaliers of Concordia on Saturday.
Wilson scored her 998th and 999th point less than three minutes into the contest on a fast break lay-up and then moved into ninth all-time in career scoring with 5:55 to go in the first half when she went over the 1,000-point mark with a driving lay-up on the left side of the bucket. The 5-foot-6 senior point guard became the first-ever member of the 1,000-point, 500-rebound, and 500-assist club in Warrior women's basketball history. In her three-plus season, Wilson has scored 1,008 points, grabbed 507 rebounds, and handed out 520 assists.
Meanwhile, Norton opened the game shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field over the first twenty minutes, including 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, en route to scoring her game-high in points. The 5-foot-8 senior guard ended the night 7-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-8 from long distance. Norton continues to climb the all-time career point ladder, as she has scored 1,172 points over her three-plus year career and sits 5th on the chart.
The host Warriors took a 10-point lead (10-0) in the first 4:48, as Concordia could not find the bottom of the bucket on its first seven shots. The visiting Cavaliers recorded their first field goal with 14:50 on the clock when Maryam Razavi hit her first of four three pointers in the half. Corban extended its lead to 11 points (18-7) following a 3-pointer by Norton with 12:35 remaining in the opening stanza. Concordia got as close as two points (23-21) when Razavi connected on a jumper with 7:55 to go. The Warriors ended the half on a 20-15 run that was highlighted by Norton perfect performance from the field to take a 7-point advantage (43-36) into the locker room.
In the opening 40 seconds of the second half, each team traded 3-pointers before Corban used a 20-5 run over a span of 7:18 to take a 15-point lead (61-46). The Warriors pushed their lead to as much as 22 (77-55) following an acrobatic, high-arching bank lay-up on the baseline and a free throw by Wilson with 3:05 left. Sophomore Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) helped Corban grab its second 22-point lead (79-57) via a jumper from the free throw line extended with 1:37 remaining before Concordia capped the game's scoring when Ann Snodderly connected on a lay-up with 16 seconds to go in the game.
Along with Norton's point total, junior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Wilson and fellow senior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) notched 11 and 12 points respectively, while Wilson handed out a game-high 11 assists.
As a team, Corban shot 31-for-59 (52.5%) from the field, including 9-for-21 (42.9%) from beyond the arc. The Warriors connected on a season-high nine 3-point buckets, as Norton and Dionne combined to hit all of the Warriors' shots from long distance. Meanwhile, Concordia shot 23-for-59 (39.0%) from the field, including 5-for-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc.
Concordia was led by Razavi and Snodderly's team-high 16 points each, while Denise Benedict and Joyce Oniah added 9 and 8 points respectively. Kelsey Schaefer grabbed a team-best 6 rebounds, while Angie Woolhiser and Tanya Baker each pulled down 5 boards.
With the win, Corban improves to 11-5 overall, 3-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia falls to 4-12 overall, 1-4 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the court on Friday, January 5th, when they travel north to Olympia, Washington, for a match-up with the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College beginning at 5:30 p.m. |
