December 20, 2005

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.) scored a game and career-high 25 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line, but it was not enough as the NAIA’s No. 17-ranked Corban College women’s basketball team fell to Eastern Oregon, 76-56, on Tuesday night.

Junior Jessi Schaumburg scored a career-high 25 points tonight against Eastern Oregon and has scored 39 points over the last two games.

The Warriors arrived in La Grande one day earlier than expected due to the first ice storm of the year, but did not seem to show any signs of the extra day spent on the eastern portion of Oregon, as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over the first 90 seconds.  The Warriors held two more 4-point leads throughout the first six minutes before the Mountaineers tied the game for the second time at 11-all with 11:35 remaining in the half.  EOU grabbed a 3-point lead on three separate occasions before Corban tied the game at 19-apiece following a 3-pointer by junior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) with 6:21 left.  The two teams traded the lead five times over the next 5 minutes before Eastern Oregon grabbed their fifth and final lead at 25-24 with 1:38 on the clock.  The Mountaineers extended their lead to 6 points (30-24) at halftime and then came out in the second half and extended the lead to as many as 26 points (70-44) with 3:29 left in the game.  The Warriors outscored the host Mountaineers, 12-6, over the final 3:29 for the final margin of 20 points.

Sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) was the only other Warrior to score in double figures with 10 points, while freshman Emily Kindle (Stayton, Ore.) and junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) added 6 and 5 points respectively.  Senior Erin Plotts (Mill City, Ore.) grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds for Corban, while Steigleman, Dionne, and junior Jessica Cox (Bridgeport, Calif.) pulled down 3 rebounds each.

Corban shot 22-for-66 (33.3%) from the field, while Eastern Oregon shot 27-for-55 (49.1%).

Heidi Horobiowski led the Mountaineers with 19 points, while Sheena Henderson and Christie Weaver rounded out the double-digit EOU scorers with 15 and 13 points.  Adria Layne grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for Eastern Oregon, while Weaver and Liz Brice pulled down 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.

With the loss, Corban falls to 11-3 overall, 2-1 in CCC play.  Eastern Oregon improves to 8-3, 2-0 in CCC play.  The Warriors are next in action on Wednesday, December 21st, when they take on the Coyotes of Albertson College of Idaho beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
