SALEM, Ore. – Seniors Jessi Norton (Redmond, Ore.) and Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) surpassed career milestones in career scoring, assists, and rebounds in Corban's women's basketball team's victory over the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon, 76-59, Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With 4:37 remaining in the first half, Norton knocked down a jumper at the free throw line to move into the 8th spot on the Corban women’s basketball all-time scoring chart. Finishing with 17 points on the night, Norton has scored 1,128 points during her four-year career as a Warrior.
Wilson pulled down the 500th rebound of her career with 17:51 left in the game. She is the 8th player in Corban women’s basketball history to collect 500 rebounds. The guard also dished off her 500th career assist with 15:12 remaining. Going beyond the milestone, Wilson is currently ranked 2nd among Corban’s all-time assist leaders with 503.
Corban began the scoring early. Within the first four seconds, Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) knocked the opening tip to junior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), who found senior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) for the opening basket. However, EOU was able to bounce-back and obtained their first lead (10-9) after Tiffanie Ulmer hit a jumper off of an assist from Elise Hawes with 14:57 left in the first half.
At 10:42, Wilson drove the lane and made one of her game-high six assists to Dionne, putting the Warriors, once and for all, on top of the Mountaineers (17-16). Norton knocked home a pair of free throws, increasing Corban’s lead (23-19) with 8:11 left in the first half. Freshman Hillary Sell (Aloha, Ore.) helped the scoring with 5:16 remaining in the first half when she nailed a three-pointer that made the Warrior lead nine points (32-23).
Tragedy only struck the Warriors with 1:25 left on the first half clock, while they held a 42-28 advantage. Their 12th attempt from the free throw line rimmed out. This was the team’s first miss from the charity stripe in the course of three halves and concluded a streak of 25 consecutive free throws made. After Steigleman hit a running jumper with only two seconds left, however, the Warriors went into the break with a pleasing 16-point lead (44-28).
The Warriors remained on top of the game in the second half. Norton re-started a perfect free throw streak by converting on two with 13:24 left that put the Warriors up 52-32. A pair from Carras with 10:04 left extended Corban's lead to 22 points (60-38). The Warriors stretched out to their largest lead of 24 points on three separate occasions. First, Sell hit a jumper off of a Dionne assist at the 7:38 mark (68-44). Then, Sell recorded an unassisted basket with 7:06 remaining that made the score 70-46 in favor of the Warriors. Corban increased its lead for the final time with 5:04 left (72-48) when Norton scored off a Wilson assist.
The Mountaineers briefly cut into Corban’s lead in the closing minutes, dropping it to 15 (74-59) with 27 seconds remaining on the clock. However, the Warriors stayed in control after sophomore Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) got on the board, notching her lone lay-up off a sophomore Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) assist that sealed the game at 76-59.
The elder Steigleman had a game-high 19 points for the Warriors, while Norton and Sell added 17 and 13 respectively. Norton also had a game-high 8 rebounds and Wilson recorded a game-high 6 assists and 5 steals.
Sheena Henderson had a team-high 18 points for the Mountaineers, while Christie Weaver notched 11 points of her own. Hawes grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds for Eastern Oregon University and had a team-high 2 steals.
The Warriors finished 15-for-16 (93.8%) from the free throw line, 28-for-59 (47.5%) from the field, and 5-for-14 (35.7%) behind the 3-point line. Their counterparts from Eastern Oregon recorded 2-for-4 (50.0%) from the charity stripe, 25-for-63 (39.7%) from the field, and 7-for-17 (41.2%) on three-pointers.
With their fifth straight win, Corban improves to 10-4 overall, 2-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon falls to 7-3 overall, 0-2 in CCC action. The Warriors are next in action on Wednesday, December 20th, when they take on Albertson College of Idaho at 5:30 p.m. inside C. E. Jeffers Sports Center. Wilson, who is a mere eight points shy of eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau, will be looking to become the first player in program history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists as a Warrior.
