Warriors sweep season series against Wolves of Western Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – Junior Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) scored a team-high 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including 5-for-8 from the free throw line, as Corban’s women’s basketball team overcame a slow start and defeated their NCAA Division II opponent Western Oregon, 68-61, on Friday night.

Junior Tosha Wilson scored 8 points, handed out a team-high 5 assists, and recorded a game-high 6 steals, as the Warriors have won 10 out of their last 11 games.

Corban earned its 5th win ever and its third straight over the Wolves, as they finished up a 2005 home-and-home series with the Monmouth visitors.

Trailing by 8 (37-29) at halftime, Corban came out and used a 12-4 run over a 4 minute span to tie the game at 41-all following a 3-point basket by junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.).  Western Oregon used an 11-3 run of its own over a 4-minute to push the lead back to 8 points (52-44) before the Warriors scored 9 unanswered points to take their first lead (53-52) since they were up 1-0 after the first 12 seconds of the game.  Freshman Emily Kindle (Stayton, Ore.) gave Corban the lead on a lay up with 8:06 remaining in the game and the Warriors never looked back, finishing with a 15-9 run for the final margin of 7 points.

Sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), who was celebrating her 20th birthday, scored 12 points on 6-for-12 shooting, while Kindle chipped in with 12 points and a team-high 9 rebounds.  Junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) led the Warriors’ defense with a game-high 6 steals, while Steigleman aided with 5 thefts of her own.

Corban shot 26-for-61 (42.65%) from the field, while Western Oregon shot 25-for-58 (43.1%).  The Warriors made up the difference in the scoring from the free throw line, as they made 9 more shots than the visiting Wolves.

Leada Berkey paced Western Oregon with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Chelsea Pahl and Kaila Hawley added 9 points each.

With the win, Corban improves to 10-2 overall, while Western Oregon falls to 0-6.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, December 17th, when they face NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark College beginning at 6:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
