SALEM, Ore. - Senior Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, as Corban's women's basketball team defeated cross-town rival Willamette, 74-53, to get back to their winning ways at Cone Field House on Tuesday.
Tallying 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field, Carras helped the Warriors knock off their inner-city rivals. Fellow senior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) led all scorers with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, while junior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) added 14 of her own.
This was the second time this season that Corban has topped the Bearcats with the first coming on November 21st, when the Warriors beat the cross-town Division III university on Corban’s home court, 71-62.
Despite giving up the first six points of the game, the Warriors were able to fight back. They grabbed a 9-point lead (19-10) with 10:20 left in the first half after senior Jessi Norton (Redmond, Ore.) drained a three-pointer off a Wilson assist. Willamette kept things close, narrowing the lead to just 3 (19-16) with 8:33 remaining in the half when Tracie Nygaard hit a jump shot on an assist from Laura Payne. The Warriors answered by going on a 22-2 run to end the opening stanza that gave them a 23-point lead (41-18) heading into the locker room.
Willamette attempted to battle back in the second half, but the Corban lead seemed too great. The host Bearcats narrowed the lead to 17 points (43-26) at the 17:08 mark, but junior Katie Dennis (Damascus, Ore.) hit a shot with just under eight minutes remaining to ice the game and extended Corban to its largest lead of the night (67-40). Following a 10-0 run by Willamette that cut the lead to 67-50, the steady defense of the Warriors kept the Bearcats at bay and handed the Warriors their sixth win of the season.
Corban hit 89.5% (17-for-19) from the free-throw line, which was better than Willamette’s 75.0% (15-for-20). As a team, the Warriors snatched 10 steals and recorded three shots from long distance.
Leading the way for the Bearcats was Nygaard with 11 points, while Keilyn Fujioka and Payne added 10 and 9 respectively.
With the win, Corban improves to 6-4 overall, while Willamette falls to 0-8 on the season. The Warriors are back in action on Thursday, December 7th, when they host the Linfield College Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. inside the C. E. Jeffers Sport Center.
