Warriors open conference season with victory over Southern Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – Junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.) scored a team-high 18 points in leading Corban’s women’s basketball team to a 69-61 come-from-behind win over Southern Oregon on Friday night. The Warriors have now won four straight.
Trailing by 4 (33-29) at halftime, the Warriors turned things around at the defensive end, forcing the Red Raiders into 11 turnovers and holding the visitors to a mere 27% shooting from the field in the second half. Junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) nabbed a game-high 6 steals and senior Erin Plotts (Mill City, Ore.) added 4 more, as Corban pressured Southern Oregon into 28 turnovers for the game.
Along with Schaumburg (pictured right), Wilson and junior Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) added 12 and 10 points respectively, while Carras pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
While the Red Raiders struggled offensively after the half, the Warriors improved their marksmanship, hitting 45% from the field in outscoring their opponents 40-28 in the second half.
Overall, Corban shot 25-for-66 (37.9%) from the field, while Southern Oregon shot 22-for-61 (36.1%) from the field. The Warriors saw the difference in score from the free throw line, as they made 15-out-of-18 (83.3%) led by Schaumburg’s perfect 8-for-8.
The teams stayed close through much of the first half, until the visitors used an 11-8 run in the final five minutes to gain the four point margin heading into the break.
Jenna Ayers led Southern Oregon with a game-high 19 points, while Andi Peterson and Jacki Butler added 12 and 8 points respectively. Emily Brough led the Red Raiders with 10 rebounds, while Ayers and Ashley Hafner grabbed 4 rebounds each.
With the win, Corban improves to 6-1 overall, 1-0 in conference. Southern Oregon falls to 5-4 overall, 0-1 in conference. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, December 3rd, when they meet the Hustlin’ Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
