Norton and Carras combine for 37 in win over Raiders

ASHLAND, Ore. - Seniors Jessi Norton (Redmond, Ore.) and Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) combined for 37 points, as Corban's women's basketball team tipped off the Cascade Collegiate Conference season with a 78-74 victory over the Red Raiders of Southern Oregon on Friday.

Norton led all players with 19 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field, including a 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line.  Meanwhile, Carras chipped in with an 18-point performance on 8-for-13 shooting from the field while adding a block and a steal in 25 minutes of action.

Despite trailing by 5 (37-32) at halftime, Corban came out and shot 17-for-28 (60.7%) from the field in the second half and an early 6-0 run to take the lead for good.

Following a free throw by junior forward Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) that put the visiting Warriors up by 4 (74-70), Southern Oregon hit back-to-back free throws with 56 seconds remaining in the game.  After SOU called a timeout, Carras put the game away when she grabbed her game-leading 9th rebound and put back her 17th and 18th point to secure Corban's third straight victory.

The victory was Corban's sixth straight over Southern Oregon dating back to the 2003-04 season.  Over that span, the Warriors have defeated the Red Raiders by an average of 9.0 points per game.

Senior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) and junior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) rounded out the Warriors' double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points respectively, while Steigleman aided Carras on the boards with 7 rebounds. Peterson concluded with 9 points and 5 rebounds on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, while senior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville,Ore.) capped the starting fives' scoring with 7 points.

As a team, Corban shot 29-for-63 (46.0%) from the field, including 15-for-23 (65.2%) from the free throw line.  On the other hand, Southern Oregon shot 29-for-72 (40.3%) from the field and turned in a 12-for-20 (60.0%) performance from the charity stripe.

Southern Oregon was led by Chelsey Zimmerman's team-high 18 points on 7-for-19 shooting from the field, while Whitney Scott and Kelsey Richards added 15 and 12 points respectively.  Emily Brough grabbed a game and team-high 9 rebounds, while Richards and Andi Peterson pulled down 8 and 6 boards respectively.

With the win, Corban improves to 5-3 overall, 1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.  Meanwhile, Southern Oregon drops to 4-4 overall, 0-1 in CCC action. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, December 2nd, when they continue their trip through Southern Oregon with a Cascade Conference contest against Oregon Institute of Technology beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Klamath Falls.
