Warriors kick off Thanksgiving Tournament with win over Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – After a one-day layoff due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Corban’s women’s basketball team headed down to the state of California and into the Bay area for a two-game tournament against host Holy Names and California Pacific Conference member Dominican.

On Friday night, the Warriors took on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) No. 7-ranked Hawks of Holy Names University and handed them a 77-59 loss in the opening round of the two-day event.

Sophomore Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) led all scorers with a game-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds, while junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.) and sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) added 16 and 11 points respectively.

For the second game in a row, all twelve Corban players score at least two points, as the Warriors extended their winning streak to two games.

Along with Carras’ game-high in rebounds, senior Erin Plotts (Mill City, Ore.) and junior Jessica Cox (Bridgeport, Calif.) pulled down 6 and 4 rebounds respectively.

Corban shot 35-for-65 (53.8%) from the field, while Holy Names shot 20-for-58 (34.5%).

The host Hawks were led by Devina Brooks’ team-high 17 points, while Kimmer Horsen added 14 points.  Both Brooks and Horsen grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds for Holy Names.

With the win, Corban improves to 4-1 overall, while Holy Names falls to 2-4 overall.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, November 26th, when they close out the Holy Names Thanksgiving Tournament against Dominican (Calif.) at 5:00 p.m. in Oakland, California.
