Warriors use early run in win over cross town neighbor Willamette

November 22, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – In a highly-touted cross town match-up, Corban’s women’s basketball team used an opening 20-1 run to cruise to a 72-50 victory over NCAA Division III member Willamette on Tuesday night.

Senior Erin Plotts (Mill City, Ore.) -- pictured right -- scored a team-high 11 points, while juniors Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) and Jessica Cox (Bridgeport, Calif.) added 8 points each.  Leading scorer Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) was held to only 7 points, in 21 minutes of action, but her teammates picked up the slack and every player scored at least 2 points.

Ahead by 17 (41-24) at halftime, fourth-year head Dave Bale and the Warriors watched as the host Bearcats began a come back over the final twenty minutes, but it was too-little, too-late for Willamette.

Despite a huge advantage on the offensive glass for Willamette – 22 to 9 – Corban almost doubled the Bearcats in defensive rebounds – 43 to 25 – as freshman Emily Kindle (Stayton, Ore.) led all players with a game-high 12 boards for the Warriors.

Corban shot 24-for-55 (43.6%) from the field, while Willamette shot 15-for-72 (20.8%).  The Warriors hit 91.3% from the line (21-for-23) and the Bearcats connected on 16 of their shots from the charity stripe.

Willamette was led by Brittany Farrer’s game-high 18 points, while Laura Payne and Jennifer Bell added 10 and 8 points respectively.  Farrer led the Bearcats with a team-high 10 rebounds, while Cailin Andrus and two other Willamette players grabbed 6 and 5 rebounds respectively.

With the win, Corban improves to 3-1, while Willamette falls to 1-2.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, November 25th, when they compete in the Holy Names Thanksgiving Tournament.  The Warriors opens against tournament-host Holy Names beginning at 8:00 p.m. in Oakland, California.
