LEWISTON, Idaho – For the third straight game, sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led Corban’s women’s basketball team in scoring with 12 points despite falling in their final game at the Staples Classic to host Lewis-Clark State, 66-50, on Saturday night.
The 2004-2005 conference Freshman of the Year led a quintet of players that scored 7-or-more points, while grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds.
“We played really hard,” said fourth-year head coach Dave Bale. “I am pleased with our effort tonight, but too many turnovers (27) led to the loss. In a very physical game, the height factor was the difference in the end, as they (Lewis-Clark State) played big throughout and beat us up inside. Lewis-Clark State is a really good team that should have a good season and they deserved the win.”
Along with Steigleman, sophomore Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) and a trio of Warriors scored 11 and 7 points respectively. Carras combined with Steigleman to grab 20 rebounds – 12 for Steigleman and 8 for Carras – while junior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) chipped in with 4.
Trailing by 4 (31-27) at halftime, Corban fell victim to the turnovers, as well as the play of Lewis-Clark’s two post players – Aundrea Morrison and Ashley Baker – that each stood over 6 feet.
Corban shot 20-for-60 (33.3%) from the field, while Lewis-Clark State shot 27-for-76 (35.5%). Both teams combined to shoot 8-for-29 (27.6%) from behind the 3-point line and 14-for-24 (58.3%) from the free throw line.
Lewis-Clark State was led by Morrison’s game-high 20 points, while Baker added 19 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
With the loss, Corban falls to 2-1, while Lewis-Clark State improves to 3-0. The Warriors are next in action on Tuesday, November 22nd, when they face cross-town neighbor Willamette beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the Lestle J. Sparks Center in Salem.
