WALLA WALLA, Wash. -
Seniors Kendall Dionne (Brownville, Ore.) and Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) scored a combined 46 points on 17-for-29 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to Whitman College, 90-83 in overtime, on Saturday.
Despite having four players in double figures, the Warriors were unable to top the host Missionaries in an overtime nail-biter in the Sherwood Center. The game went into overtime after Whitman's Kelsey Krumdieck took down an offensive rebound and banked the put back off the backboard as the buzzer sounded.
Dionne and Carras led the way in points with each tallying 23 for the lady Warriors. Senior Jessi Norton (Redmond, Ore.) recorded 13 points of her own and freshman Hillary Sell (Aloha, Ore.) finished with 11. Unfortunately, Corban was powerless to stop Kristina Francis and Krumdieck, who scored 26 and 23 on the night.
After regulation, Whitman outscored the Warriors by 7 points (18-11), which included 10 points via free throws. As a team, the Warriors hit 18-for-27 from the charity stripe, including one important free throw from senior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) that gave the Oregon-based team a two-point advantage with 23 seconds remaining in the second half. On the other hand, the Missionaries converted on 21-out-of-26 free throws in their victory.
Scoring first in the extra period was not nearly enough to hold off the Missionaries, who in-turn went on an 8-2 run over a two-minute span and held an insurmountable 80-75 lead with 2:32 left in overtime. With 43 seconds remaining, Whitman held an 86-78 lead, but the Warriors did not give up however. Dionne recorded five points on back-to-back shots to narrow the margin to 3 points (86-83) with only 13 seconds on the clock.
Looking to steal the ball and knot the game for the tenth time, Corban fouled Francis after the Missionaries tossed the ball in. With pressure on her shoulders, Francis knocked down the finals four free throws in her team's last two possessions to dash all hopes of a Warrior victory.
Corban ended the game 30-for-69 (43.5%) from the field, while Whitman hit a 51.7% (31-for-6) clip from the field. Wilson had an all-around game with 9 points, 7 rebounds (6 defensively), 6 assists, and 4 steals.
The Warriors led twice by five points in the first half, but failed to keep the lead as they went into the break down by three (38-35). Carras finished with three consecutive buckets in the paint to open the second half and give the Warriors an early 46-42 advantage. Despite the early goings, Whitman regained the lead with 6:18 left in the second period, 61-57. With three ties and one lead change, Corban seemed to have control of the game only to have it get away from them at the buzzer.
Corban falls to 2-3 overall, while Whitman begins their young season 2-0. The Warriors are next in action on Tuesday, November 21st, when they host cross-town rival Willamette beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C. E. Jeffers Sport Center.
