Warriors open Staples Classic with win over Westminster

LEWISTON, Idaho – In their second game this season, Corban’s women’s basketball team took the court following a ten-day layoff and showed no ill effects of nearly two weeks without a game, as they handed Westminster (Utah) an 85-69 loss to kick off the Staples Classic hosted by Lewis-Clark State College on Friday evening.
Sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led Corban with a team-high 15 points on 6-for-11 (54.5%) shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. The 2004-2005 conference Freshman of the Year was 1 of 4 Warriors that scored in double figures, as well as pulling down 7 rebounds.
Along with Steigleman, junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.), sophomore Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.), and junior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) scored 13, 10, and 10 points respectively, while senior Erin Plotts (Mill City, Ore.) led Corban with a team-high 8 rebounds.
“The girls played well tonight,” said fourth-year head coach Dave Bale. “We played in spurts of 3-4 minutes and everyone contributed when they were needed. Tonight’s win was a total team effort.”
Corban shot 33-for-65 (50.8%) from the field, including 15-for-23 (65.2%) from the free throw line, while Westminster shot 25-for-55 (45.5%) from the field, including 9-for-10 (90.0%) from the free throw line. Both teams combined to shoot 14-for-31 (45.2%) from the behind the 3-point line, as the Warriors connected on 4 shots from long distance and Westminster canned 10 shots from beyond the arc.
Westminster was led by Shannon Evans’ game-high 20 points, while Shalee Fackrell and Janae Hirschi scored 18 and 13 points respectively. Jordan Eckman led Westminster with a game-high 9 rebounds, while Fackrell and Hirschi grabbed 7 and 3 rebounds respectively.
With the win, Corban improves to 2-0, while Westminster falls to 0-1. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, November 19th, when they face Lewis-Clark State in the Staples Classic at 6:00 p.m. in Lewiston, Idaho.
