ROSEVILLE, Calif. -
Junior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) poured in a game-high 23 points on 11-for-23 shooting, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to GSAC member California Baptist, 85-75, in the opening round of the William Jessup Basketball Tournament on Friday.
After grabbing a 5-point lead (47-42) at halftime, the designated home team Warriors committed 12 second half turnovers that led to being out-scored by 15 (43-28) for the final margin.
Steigleman led all players in points, as the junior wing player shot 11-for-23 from the field, including 1-for-2 from the free throw line. While playing a team-high 38 minutes, the 5-foot-10 Churchill High School graduate also grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds.
Along with Steigleman, senior guard Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) pitched in with a career-high 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-6 from beyond the 3-point line. Dionne was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the opening half, but could not overcome the Lancer pressure in the second half.
Senior all-conference guard Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) and senior forward Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) rounded out the Warrior scorers in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Wilson also handed out a game-high 8 assists, while grabbing 7 rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
Junior forward Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.), senior guard Jessi Norton (Redmond, Ore.), and junior center Katie Dennis (Damascus, Ore.) rounded out Corban's scoring with 6, 4, and 1 point respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 42% from the field and 58% from the free throw line, but was out-rebounded by 8 (43-38) and committed a season-high 22 turnovers.
California Baptist was led by Nicole Brown's team-high 18 points on 7-for-21 shooting from the field, while Brandie McCann, Tiffany Sasada, and Lauren Laurent pitched in with 15, 14, and 12 points respectively. Brown, who played all 40 minutes, also handed out a team-best 6 assists and recorded 4 steals.
Corban drops to 1-1 on the young season, while California Baptist improves to 1-0. The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, November 11th, when they will play in the consolation game against either Northwest Christian or tournament-host William Jessup beginning at 2:00 p.m. The game can be heard live via the Internet thanks to Corban's partnership with Stretch Internet at www.gowarriorsgo.com.
