Warriors open season with come-from-behind victory over Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – Kicking off the 2005-2006 season, Corban’s women’s basketball team needed to work a little bit harder than expected in order to earn their first victory of the year, 63-56, over Northwest Christian on Tuesday night.

After two convincing wins over the Beacons last season, the Warriors four themselves trailing by 11 (37-26) at halftime.  Corban came out in the second half and put the defensive clamps on the Beacons and held them to 19 points over the final twenty minutes en route to winning its first game of the new season.

Sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led Corban with a team-high 15 points on 5-for-13 (38.5%) shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.  Steigleman, who was the conference Freshman of the Year last season, played a team-high 29 minutes, pulled down 4 rebounds, handed out 2 assists, and recorded 3 steals, as the Warriors improved to 3-0 in their brief history with the host Beacons.

Along with the Churchill High School graduate, junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) and junior Jessica Cox (Bridgeport, Calif.) recorded 10 and 8 points respectively.  Cox also pulled down a team-high 7 rebounds, while sophomore Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) and two other Warriors grabbed 5 and 4 rebounds respectively.  Wilson and fellow junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.) -- pictured right -- handed out a game-high 4 assists each, while Steigleman and junior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) each dished out 2 assists.

Corban shot 21-for-65 (32.3%) from the field, including 18-for-24 (75.0%) from the free throw line, while Northwest Christian shot 20-for-49 (40.8%) from the field and 16-for-25 (64.0%) from the free throw line.

The Beacons were led by Jacquie Lipp’s game-high 18 points, while Elise and Emily Gray recorded 12 and 10 points respectively.  McKenzie Gambee grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds for Northwest Christian, while Emily Gray and Lipp recorded 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.  Lipp and Gambee led the Beacons with 3 assists each, while three other NWC players handed out 2 assists each.

With the win, Corban begins the season 1-0, while Northwest Christian falls to 1-1.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, November 18th, when they face Westminster (Utah) in the Lewis-Clark State Tournament at 5:30 p.m. in Lewiston, Idaho.
