ASHLAND, Ore. – Freshman Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) scored a career-high 19 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell, 89-78, to the NAIA's No. 22-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon Friday inside McNeal Pavilion.
Along with her performance from the field, Miller added an outstanding 11-for-12 showing at the free throw line en route to securing her career-high in scoring. Besides Miller's performance, senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) added 18 and 14 points respectively. A trio of Warriors -- senior Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.), and freshman Katie Stewart (Eugene, Ore.) -- added six points each, as no other Warrior scored more than two points.
In the opening half, both teams battled back and forth over the first five-plus minutes before the host Red Raiders secured a slim two-point advantage (8-6) via lay-up by Kellyn Cooper. From that point on, Southern Oregon never looked back and built its lead to as much as 12 points (20-8) with 12:31 remaining via a 12-2 run over a span of two minutes and fifteen seconds. Corban would fight back over the half's final 12-plus minutes and get within a mere five points (45-40) at intermission following back-to-back free throws by Miller with one second showing on the clock.
In the second half, Corban would get as close as four points (49-45) as Goette connected on a jumper with 17:36 left in the contest. The host Red Raiders would use an 11-2 run over a span of 2:37 to grab a 13-point lead (60-47) with just under 15 minutes remaining before pushing their lead to as much as 19 points (74-55) following back-to-back free throws by Whitney Scott with 8:21 on the clock. The visiting Warriors would get as close as 10 points (84-74) following an old fashion three-point play by Bostwick with just under two minutes remaining before settling for the final margin of 11 points (89-78).
Along with the aforementioned group of seven players, six of the remaining 10 Warriors scored at least one point with four players -- sophomore Beth McLam (Fairfield, Idaho), freshman Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.), freshman Jennifer Hansen (Molalla, Ore.), and freshman Kayla Shaughnessy (Camano Island, Wash.) -- scoring two points each. Goette pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Miller and Steigleman grabbed four boards each.
Southern Oregon was led by Chelsey Muri, who scored a game and team-high 20 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field to go along with an 8-for-11 showing at the free throw line. Along with Muri, four other Red Raiders -- Rhiannon Dickison, Jacki Speer, Ashley Baker, and Scott -- added 19, 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. Speer pulled down a game and team-high nine rebounds for Southern Oregon, while Baker and Cooper grabbed seven and four boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 26-for-63 (41.3%) from the field including 1-for-5 (20.0%) from behind the three-point line and 25-for-33 (75.8%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 30-for-71 (42.3%) from the field that included performances of 5-for-15 (33.3%) from beyond the arc and 24-for-34 (70.6%) from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls to 9-20 overall, 5-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 25-4 overall, 16-3 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor for the final time this season on Saturday, February 23rd, when Corban travels to Klamath Falls to take on the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 5:30 p.m.
